Proposal would
exempt more equity from creditors

LINCOLN - The Nebraska Legislature took a
step today toward protecting more homeowners from being forced onto the
street to pay off their debts. By a vote of 27-9, lawmakers gave
first-round approval to Legislative Bill 237, which would exempt $60,000
of a home's value from being seized to pay off a homeowner's medical
bills, credit cards and other debts in bankruptcy proceedings. Current
state law exempts only $12,500 of a home's value. That means that a
person with more than that much equity could be forced to sell the home
and use any proceeds above $12,500 to pay off creditors. .........more
